50+ Elder Empowerment

Purpose

Having been running the "50+ Elder Empowerment Project" since 2020, The Mustard Seed Mission has encouraged middle-aged and elderly people to make good use of their wisdom and skills in recreating new values and new objectives that flip the stereotype of retirement.

By redefining their retirement lifestyle, they learned to make the best use of their free time and disposable income to engage in activities that were beneficial to their physical and mental health. In addition, middle-aged and elderly people were also encouraged to return to the workforce or devote themselves to social services so that they can change their retirement lifestyle for the better.

Service Features

  1. Workshop: the empowerment of middle-aged and elderly people (career empowerment/technical empowerment).
  2. Faculty: amateur lecturers who have received relevant training.
  3. Employment: preparation, counseling, internship, and workplace experience.
  4. Part-time job: working holiday at Vocational Training Center in Hualien County.

A Healthier Lifestyle

Retired from work, the Wang sisters signed up for the sewing workshops at entry level and advanced level. With basic knowledge of sewing, both sisters were interested in needlework.

The older sister, Lilly, was a public servant, she has been taking care of her 90-year-old mother since she retired from her stable job 10 years ago. To increase her chance of going outdoors, she signed up for the sewing workshop that she was originally interested in. By expanding her social network, meeting new friends, and interacting with her teachers, Lilly was provided with a chance to withdraw from her monotonous lifestyle as a caregiver.

According to the younger sister, Penny, she wished to learn a marketable skill at the sewing workshop and also signed up for housekeeping courses to learn a new trade. Having been doing part-time jobs with neither a stable income nor an adequate retirement pension, Penny wished to earn some extra spending money by sharpening her skills for sewing. In order not to feel out of touch with society after retirement, Penny was looking forward to engaging in lifelong learning after she retired from her job.
