Since 1952, The Mustard Seed Mission has stood with children, families, and communities across Taiwan—helping secure the foundations of stability, dignity, and lasting growth.

Who We Are

Rooted in Taiwan since 1952

Founded in 1952 as Taiwan's first registered local Christian social welfare organization, The Mustard Seed Mission (MSM) has served children, families, and communities for over 70 years. Guided by the biblical mustard seed's message of hope and growth, we focus on building resilient, caring communities across Taiwan and beyond.

Mission

Inspired by the parable of the mustard seed, The Mustard Seed Mission (MSM) plants seeds of faith, hope, and love in the lives of vulnerable children and families across Taiwan—nurturing them toward stability, dignity, and renewed hope for the future.

Vision

We envision a future where every fragile beginning—a child, a family, a community—is given room to grow: from a seed too small to notice, into a tree strong enough to shelter others.

Across Taiwan and beyond, MSM works toward a day when no family stands alone in hardship, when children who once lacked safety and opportunity become the ones extending care to others—communities marked by stability, dignity, and mutual belonging, carried forward from one generation to the next.

MSM's approach to helping vulnerable families rests on three enduring commitments. These are not sequential program stages, but three values that operate together in how MSM shows up for every family it serves.

Connection

We enter the lives of struggling families not as outsiders, but as steady, faith-rooted companions. Presence and relationship come before program delivery.

Care

We meet basic, urgent needs first—safety, food, shelter, schooling—because dignity requires having one's foundational needs secured.

Growth

We invest in education, employment, and skill-building so families move from receiving support to standing on their own—and, in time, become a source of support for others.

Our Approach

From stability to self-reliance

MSM's work follows a deliberate logic, not a scattered list of services. Support begins with securing life's basics—food, shelter, stability—then moves toward safety, ensuring every child has a home they can trust.

Once that foundation is in place, three things matter just as much as each other, and none comes before the rest: the chance to make one's own choices rather than simply receive what others decide is best; the skill and confidence to stand capably in one's own life; and relationships—with caregivers, mentors, and community—that make growth feel shared rather than solitary.

Securing that foundation, and holding these three needs together, is what MSM's seven core programs are built to do.

Programs & Services

Seven programs, one shared purpose

Each program addresses a distinct part of the support system around vulnerable children, youth, families, and communities while carrying forward the same commitments to dignity, agency, and lasting relationships.

Program 01 · SDG 1 | SDG 4

Child Sponsorship

MSM provides long-term support for children and youth from vulnerable backgrounds through the Sprouting Dream Child Sponsorship Program, combining direct financial assistance with sustained relational and social-work accompaniment. Support includes educational funding, daily living necessities, mentorship, regular home visits, and emotional care—helping children remain in school, grow in a stable environment, and develop their potential.

Program 02 · SDG 4 | SDG 10

Youth Development

MSM's youth development platform helps young people from vulnerable backgrounds redefine what “success” and “self” mean on their own terms—without needing to leave their hometowns, or themselves, behind. Through confidence-building mentorship, identity- and creativity-focused programming, community leadership opportunities, and collaborative real-world learning projects, participants strengthen their confidence, community ties, and active role in shaping their futures.

Program 03 · SDG 3 | SDG 16

Out-of-Home Care

MSM operates residential care services—including Agape Children's Home in New Taipei City and Mustard Seed Youth Home in Hualien—for children experiencing abuse, family disintegration, or abandonment. Each home cares for up to 24 children and youth at a time, typically around 20± at any given point. These homes provide life skills training, educational enrichment, mental health services, and personalized holistic care to help children and youth rebuild confidence and move forward with hope.

Disaster Relief & Community Resilience

MSM responds swiftly to crises in Taiwan and abroad, providing essential supplies, safe housing, home repairs, hot meals, and recovery support according to local needs. Recent responses have included earthquakes and typhoons in Taiwan, the 2025 Myanmar earthquake, Typhoon Rai in the Philippines, and the Turkey–Syria earthquakes—combining emergency action with practical pathways toward recovery and community resilience.

Food & Resource Security

Through MSM's LoveLife Centre network and CARE Platform, families facing resource insecurity can meet essential daily needs—food, household goods, and basic resources—through a choice-based model rather than fixed aid parcels. The points-based digital ordering system and Warm Meal Box program help families access timely support with dignity and choice, not dependency.

Employment & Empowerment

MSM believes dignity through meaningful work is not bound by age or circumstance. This program builds pathways to skills, income, and self-reliance for young people entering the workforce, families rebuilding after a crisis through Work-for-Recovery and community livelihood initiatives, and older adults entering a new “Third Act of Life” through practical training and workplace opportunities.

Innovation & Sustainable Development

MSM partners with corporations, universities, and local stakeholders to deliver practical, community-based solutions. Corporate volunteers contribute expertise to environmental projects, disaster preparedness, and community improvements, while university collaborations bring inclusive STEM, English, and digital learning opportunities to underserved children and communities.

Highlights

Child sponsorship: Provided direct economic assistance to 8,040 children and youth, including scholarships, emergency-relief grants, and special-talent training subsidies.

Residential care: Delivered care through Agape Children's Home, Mustard Seed Youth Home, and community-based family-style care across New Taipei, Pingtung, and Taichung.

Disaster response: Responded to the Chiayi–Tainan earthquake, Typhoons Danas and Ragasa, and the Myanmar earthquake with home repairs, essential supplies, recovery support, and temporary shelter.

Community support: Continued crisis support through MSM's community service, resource-distribution, and hotline networks.

Cross-sector collaboration: Worked with universities and corporate partners on STEM, English digital learning, skill-building, and community projects.
