Youth Employment Training

Purpose

Since 1956, The Mustard Seed Mission has been working in the direction of providing vocational training to the disadvantaged. We have established nanny training programs, nursing school for women, vocational school for men, cram school for indigenous people, and vocational training center for women, empowering tens of thousands of indigenous people to become the breadwinner of the family and the hard core of the community.

As the high youth unemployment rate became a major issue in Taiwan over the years, the Mustard Seed Mission has been organizing youth employability training programs in Hualien 7 years in a row ever since 2010, assisting 127 disadvantaged youths from rural areas to improve their employability so that they can find a job in the future.

In 2017, we were honored to be selected by Citibank Taiwan as one of the members of the global project "Pathways to Progress", allowing us to expand and apply our employability training programs to Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Hualien, Taitung, etc. based on our past experience of serving young people. It is estimated that we can provide employability training services to more than 100 youths in need of employment each year.

Service Features

  1. Through experiential education activities, the empowerment courses that we provided engage youths in the introspection process of themselves and the social interaction with others.
  2. Under the company of social workers, the youth will not be left alone on their journey  to employment.

Youth Empowerment Training Program

Under the company of our counselor, Song took part in the briefing session of the "Yes, I Can! Youth Empowerment Training Program" organized by The Mustard Seed Mission. Tall and bulky with a crew cut, Song stared into the distance with a pair of empty-looking eyes. The large and small scars and tattoos that wrapped his arms revealed his rebellious and disobedient past.

After being admitted to high school, Song left his home village and met some new friends who were rebellious in Hualien City. Gradually, Song dropped out of high school and began wandering on the street with his friends. Unfortunately, Song lost his vitality and laughter after getting addicted to drugs and was completely lost in temporary numbness in an attempt to escape from reality.

Shrouded in darkness, Song's family started falling apart as his father was put out of work due to illness, and his mother, grandmother, and younger sister who was still studying at a vocational high school back then, couldn't manage to find a stable job. Worst of all, the only real estate that sheltered the family from wind and rain was seized due to his father's debts. As Song went astray, the entire family was pushed to the verge of collapse. Fortunately, Song was treated early in time to put his shattered life back together.

After completing the employability training program, Song revealed his sparkling eyes and a confident smile. With the assistance of the Mustard Seed Mission, Song got a chance to intern at a convenience store. Starting from a part-time worker, Song was promoted to a full-time position within 1 month due to his excellent work performance. As of today, he has passed the test and acquired a work certificate at entry-level under encouragement from the store manager.

Now 19 years of age, Song got back on track and was fully determined to create a bright future.
