Summary
Typhoon Danas brought severe devastation across Taiwan, becoming the first moderate typhoon to make landfall in the central region in nearly four decades. Even as it moved offshore, Typhoon Danas continued to pour heavy rain over southern Taiwan, prolonging widespread flooding. The Mustard Seed Mission (MSM) is committed to providing comprehensive support, from immediate emergency aid to long-term home reconstruction and disaster preparedness. Through this project, we aim to help affected families rebuild their lives and strengthen community resilience against future disasters.

Challenge

Typhoon Danas struck Taiwan on July 6, 2025, making landfall at Budai Township in Chiayi County. It was the first moderate typhoon to directly hit Taiwan’s central region in 39 years, bringing 28 hours of heavy rains and winds of Force 13 across the Chiayi–Tainan area. Even after moving offshore, Danas, combined with low-pressure systems and south-westerly winds, continued to drench southern Taiwan, causing floods that lingered for days.
The typhoon resulted in:

  • Power outages affected over 490,000 households and water supply disruptions impacted around 68,000 households.
  • Agricultural losses exceeding NT$2.56 billion, devastating local farmers and communities.
  • Severe flooding, roof collapses, walls caving in, and furniture and essential appliances destroyed, especially in Tainan City, Chiayi County, Yunlin County, Changhua County, and Nantou County.

Many vulnerable families were left living in hazardous conditions without necessities, facing immense psychological stress and uncertainty. Blocked roads and communication disruptions made delivering aid a major logistical challenge, slowing recovery and leaving many without support for extended periods.

Solution

MSM is scaling up its efforts to meet the increased needs in the aftermath of Typhoon Danas.:

  1. Immediate Relief: Conducting assessments and home visits to understand needs and provide comfort. Distributing food, water, and daily essentials to stabilize affected families. Coordinating with the local government and organizations to support local communities. Offering emergency financial aid and rental subsidies to help families in urgent need.
  2. Housing & Rehabilitation: MSM will coordinate repair teams to restore roofs, walls, and critical living spaces, enabling families to return to a safe home. MSM will also provide essential appliances and furniture, such as refrigerators, washing machines, bedding, school supplies, etc., to help families regain basic living functions and dignity.
  3. Long-Term Support: In addition to immediate aid, MSM is focused on disaster preparedness and resilience training, especially in rural and indigenous areas. To equip communities with knowledge and resources to face future natural disasters.

Long-Term Impact
This project will initially assist over 100 families, delivering immediate relief while laying the groundwork for long-term recovery. By restoring homes, replacing essential household goods, supporting children’s education, and promoting disaster preparedness, we aim to ensure these communities emerge stronger and more resilient. MSM’s close collaboration with local governments and community networks will help build sustainable safety nets, reducing future vulnerabilities and fostering hope for a secure future.
