Emergency Supplies Storage Hubs

Purpose

According to the Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction 2022, the number of global disasters is increasing rapidly due to factors such as climate change and human impact.

In the past 20 years, there have been 350 to 500 large and medium-sized disasters in the world every year. According to the World Bank, Taiwan ranks first in the world in the risk of extreme climate and natural disasters due to geographical factors, and the coverage rate of the population and area at risk of disasters is as high as 92% and 90%, respectively.

Therefore, The Mustard Seed Mission has so far set up Emergency Supplies Storage Hubs in 7 indigenous townships that are prone to disasters and might become isolated islands.

Service Targets

  • Balung Tribe, Fuxing District of Taoyuan City
  • Thyakan Tribe, Jianshi Township of Hsinchu County
  • Atayal Tribe, Tai'an Township of Miaoli County
  • Atayal Tribe, Renai Township of Nantou County
  • Tamahu Tribe, Taoyuan District of Kaohsiung City
  • Bunun Tribe, Haiduan Township of Taitung County
  • Yami Tribe, Lanyu Township of Taitung County

The service target includes the elderly, children, disabled, and other people living in the disaster-stricken areas who need emergency assistance in any of the above 7 indigenous villages that are prone to become isolated islands.

Disaster Response and Relief

On the afternoon of September 18, 2022, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 Mw struck Taitung (with a maximum of 6 Mw in Taitung & Hualien). Roads & bridges were disrupted, houses were damaged, and many indigenous tribes in the mountain became isolated islands due to landslides caused by the strong earthquake.

"Our tribe is currently isolated with constant aftershocks and falling rocks. There is neither water nor electricity and we're running out of drinking water".

"Due to constant aftershocks, the repair & maintenance of mountain roads is suspended. What's worse, there're still some children and seniors in the tribes left without anything to eat".

Soon after receiving the news about the disaster, The Mustard Seed Mission swung into action by opening the stockpiles of perishable food in response to the emergency, providing disaster relief to local residents who were in need, and driving the disaster relief truck to Hualien and Taitung Counties so that food and resources can be delivered in time.

As we paid home visits to the local tribes, the tribesmen shared with us their experience of the strong earthquake.

"I've never seen such a strong earthquake in my life. I couldn't stand still and was thrown to the front door."

"Everyone was frightened to death! We didn't know what to do or how to escape."

"We are running short of water supply and most of the furniture is damaged."

"Thank you The Mustard Seed Mission for sending the disaster aid to the mountain or we don't know how long we can last."
