Community Sponsorship

Purpose

On the basis of child education, children from disadvantaged communities overseas were sponsored to enjoy equal rights for receiving education. By improving the parents' skills and knowledge in parenting, children were able to attend school regularly with the aim of breaking free from poverty and raising the family's standard of living.

Service Targets

Located 15 kilometers west of the country's capital city Phnom Penh, the families of the Trapang Anhchanh (TA) community were relocated by the government in 2006 due to urban development. With an average daily income of less than 3 USD, most community residents were engaged in low-skill, labor-intensive industries such as construction workers, truck drivers, grocery store owners, and factory workers.

Among 1,000 households in the TA community, 72 children have received services from the Mustard Seed Mission. Some families even had 5-6 inhabitants crowded in a small space of 10 square meters. Most of the parents were daily wage earners without a stable income.

Child Growing Up

As a girl who's passionate about learning, Terra is currently studying in the 10th grade of senior high school and is the only daughter in her family. With her father working as a driver and her mother working in the factory, the entire family is currently renting a room in the TA community.

Due to financial difficulties, even though she studied hard at home and at school, Terra was doing less than ideal in her academic performance as she could not take part in the after-school tutoring program like her classmates did. After being enrolled in the program, she learned more about Khmer, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry and saw a great improvement in her academic performances.  Although falling behind the class before she was enrolled in the program, she's now ranking top of the class and expressed her strong determination to help her family break free from poverty through education.

With a strong desire to become the top student in her class, she arranged her study plan for each subject and followed the tight schedule. In her spare time, she would choose extracurricular reading materials related to the course content and search for relevant information online. When encountering difficulties in her schoolwork, she would always seek help from the teacher. She hoped that she could become a police officer one day.

Maintain Personal Hygiene

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a total of 608 pieces of soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste were distributed to 76 children as well as information about COVID-19.

Veha is 15 years old and is studying in Grade 9. Veha sees the positive change in the community, in which the children look much healthier and maintain personal hygiene in their clothings and daily lives, and they are speaking more politely. They are more aware of their rights and health conditions, and exhibit better academic performance and codes of conduct at school than ever before.
