Growing Older or Stronger: Jin-Yun’s Journey from Homemaker to Mentor

Taiwan is aging rapidly, with a projected one in five people over 65 by 2025. As the workforce shrinks and fewer opportunities exist for older adults, the question is: how do we respond?

For too long, aging has been seen as a weakness, you should slow down and step back. But what if midlife and beyond could be a time of growth, contribution, and new beginnings?

That’s exactly what Jin-Yun is proving.

From Homemaker to Mentor at 57

For most of her life, Jin-Yun dedicated herself to her family. She loved sewing and fabric dyeing but never imagined they could become more than a personal hobby. When she joined The Mustard Seed Mission’s 50+ Empowerment program, she simply wanted to refine her craft. But as she will soon learn, she could do so much more.

Recognizing her skill in sewing and potential, The Mustard Seed Mission encouraged her to join the Silver Leader Training program, where she developed teaching, communication, and presentation skills. It wasn’t easy. Public speaking and using technology were completely new to her. "Learning is hard, but having people walk this path with you makes all the difference," she reflected. With step-by-step support from her mentor and peers, she gained confidence. Now, she isn’t just sewing—she’s mentoring others, helping them find independence and purpose.

Aging is Changing—Let’s Lead the Way

The way we support our elders reflects our values. Across cultures, older generations are seen as pillars of wisdom, yet too often, they are left without ways to contribute. The 50+ Empowerment program is changing that by equipping older adults with real opportunities to stay active, independent, and engaged.

Through skill training workshops, participants gain practical expertise in fields such as sewing, baking, and digital literacy, helping them transition into flexible work or re-enter the workforce. For those with professional or specialized skills, the Silver Leader Training program provides the tools to become instructors, teaching others while strengthening their own confidence. The program connects them with flexible job opportunities suited to their abilities and schedules, ensuring they can continue contributing to society while maintaining a balanced life.

Jin-Yun is one of many proof points that, with the right support, older adults don’t have to be left behind—they can thrive, contribute, and continue shaping the world around them.

Be Part of the Change

Aging isn’t a decline—it’s an opportunity. When we invest in older generations, we strengthen families, communities, and society as a whole. By supporting the 50+ Empowerment program, you are helping to ensure that aging is not the end but a new beginning.

Let’s create a future where every generation has the chance to grow, belong, and make a difference together.
