The Best Gift for Kids with Broken Childhood

"This is the certificate of merit I got today!" Xiaowan brought the award for her excellent performance in school and excitedly shared it with the life counselor.

At the beginning of this year, a new life counselor came to join the girls' home at Agape Children's Home. While everyone was happily welcoming and interacting with the counselor, 10-year-old Xiaowan was extremely quiet and isolated herself from the crowd.

The past traumatic experience from her own family resulted in Xiaowan's timid and low self-esteem personality.  She grows to become a difficult individual to get along with. She is often alone as if she is out of touch with the world around her.

To get closer to and understand Xiaowan, the life counselor tries to play a quasi role of a "mother" hoping to get to know Xiaowan more.  She usually sits around the dining table and chats with Xiaowan about daily life at school.

All efforts made by the counselor have been paying off.  Xiaowan feels the companionship and warmth of "home". One day before going to bed, Xiaowan's feet suffered from muscle soreness after physical education class at school. She coquettishly asked the life counselor to help massage and soothe her.

During the massage, Xiaowan took the initiative to share interesting things about school life. The counselor listened patiently and responded.  As a result, since then, not only did they establish mutual trust but their relationship gradually grew stronger and closer.

In addition to caring about children's everyday routine, the counselor also plays an important role in guiding children into shaping their character to be a nice person and being mature.

Xiaowan, like other children in the family, often has issues getting house chores assignments done completely. Thanks to continuous training and teaching, she gradually learned to tidy her own room, help clean public areas, and be responsible for her own life.  More importantly, she goes on to become an independent, gregarious, and confident individual.

Every staff member of Agape Children's Home puts a lot of effort into taking care of each child and continues to build up mutual trust with the children through patience, tolerance, and listening.

As for the teaching of daily life, children are trained from basic regular routines to how to become independent in life.  The aim is, before leaving the Home, to allow every child to have the ability and strength to bravely move on in the near future.
