Learn to Listen, Learn to Love

On a quiet morning in Yunlin, ten-year-old Mira held her mother’s hand tightly as they stepped into a parent-child workshop. Mira is a gentle, observant, but sometimes anxious child. For Mira, her mother is her entire world.

Weight Down by Everyday Struggles

Mira’s mother carries the home on her shoulder, working hard to provide for her despite financial uncertainty. With no support from extended family, they have to rely on government and NGO aid to get by. Mira tries her best to comfort her mother or help around the house when she notices the stress is weighing on her. However, the constant financial pressure and emotional strain still lead to friction and miscommunication between them at times.

They were attending a communication workshop organized by The Mustard Seed Mission. It was a chance for families in the Sprouting Dream | Child Sponsorship Program to find a moment to pause and reconnect in the noisiness of life.

Talking Through Masks

Mira came in that morning shy and reserved, unwilling to open up in front of others. But with the instructor’s guidance, she finally lets out her thoughts, “I hope Mom won’t get angry and can listen to me.”

Her mother froze, heart tightening. For the first time in a while, she was seeing her daughter reflected in her own tired eyes, along with all the emotions they had both suppressed. Sher realized, “It's not just my child who needs me. I also need to take good care of myself. That’s how I’ll have the strength to grow up with her.”

During the second half of the workshop, they began painting masks of different expressions. Letting their feelings out as they sketched reactions they "like" and "dislike" to receive. Then, with the instructor’s guidance, they took turns repeating the same daily conversation with the different masks. Through the day’s activities, the two began to rediscover how to listen, not just with ears, but with care.

Healing Takes Root

Through the Sprouting Dream program, children like Mira are supported not only with financial and material support but also through emotional and family-strengthening activities that help rebuild trust and resilience. Our sponsorship model nurtures children and their caregivers alike, offering guidance, counseling, and community connections that grow alongside each family’s needs.

By the end of the workshop, something invisible had changed between them. As they said goodbye to MSM staff, their footsteps seemed lighter than when they arrived. The tension that once filled their words had been replaced with warmth and laughter.
