When the Walls Begin to Come Down: How Ellie Begins to Trust Again

For a long time, Ellie stopped letting people in.

She was only in sixth grade, but she’d already seen too much—her father’s drinking, his broken promises, and the moments when anger replaced love in his eyes. Each time her family hoped things would change, things got worse. Eventually, her mother left with Ellie and her two younger siblings, returning to southern Taiwan to start over.

To stay close to the kids, her mom could only take on work wrapping betel nuts near their home. Ellie studied hard—she was smart, and school became a way to help. With the help of a scholarship, she even brought home a bit of extra money to support the family.

With the support of the local church and the Sprouting Dream Child Sponsorship Program, Ellie’s family received financial aid to ease their daily burden. Her father, who worked physical labor jobs and was often away, also hoped to turn things around. Things began to shift when he briefly rejoined the family after a work injury. He promised to change. For a moment, it looked like a second chance.

Hope, Then Heartbreak

Then one night, he came home drunk again. The shouting. The fear. Ellie slammed the wall in frustration. Her siblings hid in the corner. Whatever hope had crept in was gone. Ellie pulled inward and stopped engaging—there didn’t seem to be any reason to hope anymore.

A teacher at a local church noticed the change. Seeing Ellie shut down, they reached out. “Do you think your family needs help?”

They introduced the family to the other side of the sponsorship program: family communication workshops, parenting support, and emotional care that extended far beyond financial aid.

A Quiet Step Toward Healing

One day, the whole family was invited to attend a parent-child workshop. No one expected Ellie’s dad to come—but to everyone’s surprise, he did. Quietly, without promises, he showed up. And for the first time in a long while, all five of them were there—together by choice, not just necessity.

It wasn’t something dramatic, but it was something real.

After the workshop, the MSM social worker and the local church team continued to check in with encouragement, prayer, and consistency. Even with Ellie’s father returning to traveling for work, the family found a rhythm again.

“Every time the social worker came to talk to my parents,” Ellie once said, “it felt like our home got a little better.” Accompanied by a shy smile, Ellie is finally letting herself hope again.

Lasting Change Starts with Steady Support

This kind of slow, steady change doesn’t happen by chance. It’s made possible by the generosity of people like you—and by the care of community partners who show up again and again.

Thanks to the support behind the Sprouting Dream Child Sponsorship Program, Ellie’s family healed in ways that matter most—not through grand gestures, but through everyday moments that rebuild trust.

Together, we can bring that same hope to more families like Ellie’s. Join us in helping children grow up with safety, dignity, and support—be part of the change by contributing to the Sprouting Dream Child Sponsorship Program today.
