Mother's Day 2026: What Makes Up A Mom

What Makes Up A Mom — The Mustard Seed Mission Mother's Day 2026

The Reality

They carry more than anyone should carry alone.

In Taiwan, thousands of children grow up in families stretched to their limits. Behind each of these children is a caregiver — a mother working double shifts, a grandmother raising grandchildren alone, an aunt who stepped in when no one else could.

These caregivers rarely ask for help. But the weight they carry is immense: economic pressure, medical emergencies, emotional isolation — all while trying to give their children a sense of normalcy and hope.

MSM has walked alongside these families for over 70 years — providing not just resources, but presence. Not just assistance, but relationship.

Their Stories

The caregivers behind the children we serve.

"She never complained. Not once."

Xiao Wen  ·  Single Mother  ·  Two Children

Xiao Wen

Xiao Wen fled a domestic violence situation with her two young children and started over with nothing. Her son was born with a lung condition requiring monthly medical follow-ups. Her daughter has a language developmental delay and is slowly, bravely learning to speak. There is no family support network. No safety net.

To keep some income, Xiao Wen joined MSM's work-based empowerment program — flexible work that fits around her children's medical appointments. MSM's social workers check in regularly, help coordinate services, and make sure she never has to face the hardest days entirely alone.

Her children are growing. She is still standing. This Mother's Day, families like Xiao Wen's are who your gift reaches.

"Grandma, does your back hurt?"

Grandma  ·  Grandmother Caregiver  ·  Age 70+

Grandma

After his mother passed away, Shuan moved in with his grandmother. His father works long hours far from home. Most days, it is just the two of them. Grandma tends the vegetable garden, manages the household, and makes sure Shuan gets to school. She does all of this quietly, because that is simply what she has always done.

MSM's community care team visits regularly — bringing warm meal boxes through the Ending Hunger program, and connecting Grandma to community activities that give her both income and companionship. When Shuan noticed she always rubbed her back after field work, he asked if she was in pain. She said she was fine. He still wished he could do more.

This Mother's Day, a warm meal and a community that shows up — that is what your support makes possible for families like theirs.

"I want her to wear something beautiful."

C.C.'s Mother  ·  Delivery Worker  ·  Two Children

C.C.'s Mother

C.C.'s mother runs delivery orders from early morning until late at night to support her two young children on her own. When she has a spare hour, she takes them to the park near their apartment. When she saves a little money, she uses it to buy the children new clothes. For herself, she wears the same few outfits, year-round, without complaint.

Five-year-old C.C. made a wish: to have a photo taken of the whole family, dressed beautifully, like a princess — as a Mother's Day gift. It was a small wish. But it came from the purest kind of love: a child who sees her mother's sacrifice and wants to say thank you in the only way she knows how.

When we support the family, we support the child. Your gift this Mother's Day does both.
