One Less Task at the End of the Day: A Steadier Home for Xiaoyuan and Xiaoxi

When a social worker from MSM's LoveLife Centre arrived for a routine home visit, Xiaoyuan recognized her immediately. His eyes brightened as he took her hand and led her inside.

Xiaoyuan and his sister, Xiaoxi, are about to enter pre-K. Both children had experienced language and developmental delays. With their mother diligently taking them to early-intervention services, however, they have made visible progress over the past year. Once reluctant to speak, they can now use simple words to communicate and showcase their energetic personalities.

Regular home visits allow social workers to witness progress like this firsthand. They also help MSM understand the pressures families face and identify when available resources are not yet meeting their daily needs.

Overwhelming Affection

Excited by the visit, Xiaoyuan climbed onto the social worker to show affection. Overcome by excitement, he suddenly bit her leg. Despite the pain, the social worker responded calmly but firmly, while his mother quickly stepped in to redirect him.

Xiaoyuan wanted to interact with someone he trusted, but he is still learning how to express affection and excitement without hurting others. Helping him understand these boundaries is one of many demanding responsibilities his mother manages each day.

She is raising both children alone, working during the day, accompanying them to early-intervention appointments, and studying at night for the police civil service examination. She hopes that more stable employment will provide greater financial security and allow her to better support her children.

I must manage work, my studies, their early-intervention appointments, and his behavioral needs,” she explained. “I love seeing the improvements they are making, but sometimes it gets so exhausting.

Her experience shows why material assistance must consider more than whether supplies are available. When a caregiver’s time and energy are already stretched, even planning and preparing dinner can become a significant burden.

Making Support Easier to Use

Xiaoyuan's family is one of many supported through MSM's LoveLife Centre, which connects households facing daily hardship with food, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and other essentials. At the center of this support is the CARE Platform — a points-based system that lets each family choose exactly what it needs each month, rather than receiving the same fixed package regardless of circumstance.

This approach preserves choice and dignity while helping resources respond more closely to each family's reality.

Although Xiaoyuan’s mother already had an account, she had not been using her points. Between work, childcare, appointments, and studying, she had not found the time to learn how the system operated.

During the visit, the social worker sat beside her and demonstrated the process, showing her where to find her points and how to select supplies such as toilet paper and laundry detergent. She also brought the family a Warm Meal Box — part of LoveLife Centre's food support — containing prepared dishes that could be reheated with minimal effort.

Together, the platform, prepared meals, and personal guidance addressed different parts of the same challenge: providing resources is not enough unless families can realistically access and use them.

Reaching More Families like Xiaoyuan’s

Xiaoyuan’s family did not need another standard package. They needed support that recognized the realities of caregiving, protected their ability to choose, and reduced some of the pressure surrounding everyday necessities.

This is what Ending Hunger | A Community Giving Network is designed to provide. Donations help sustain MSM's LoveLife Centre — keeping the CARE Platform stocked, the Warm Meal Box program running, and outreach workers able to connects families with resources suited to their circumstances.
