Ending Hunger | A Community Giving Network — The Mustard Seed Mission

The Challenge

Taiwan's hidden resource crisis.

Taiwan is one of Asia's most developed economies — yet over 529,000 people live in certified economic vulnerability, and hundreds of thousands more fall into the gap: earning just above the official assistance threshold, disqualified from government support, but unable to absorb rising costs.

These are Taiwan's “borderline poor” — families that look stable on paper but are one medical bill, one job loss, one unexpected expense away from crisis.

The problem runs deeper than food. When a family's monthly budget is already stretched, it isn't only the dinner table that suffers. Cleaning supplies, hygiene products, school materials — the full infrastructure of daily life begins to erode.

529,000+ people in certified economic vulnerability · 244,000 households below poverty threshold · 7.57% Taiwan relative poverty rate

“Borderline poor families earn just above the official threshold — disqualified from government aid, but unable to absorb rising costs.”

Our Approach

Not a food bank. A platform for choice.

The LoveLife Centre is MSM's answer to a model that was never quite right: the traditional food bank, where families receive whatever is available, in whatever quantities someone else decided. We built something different.

The CARE Platform (Community Access to Resources & Essentials) is a members-only digital resource system designed around one principle: families know what they need. Rather than receiving fixed, pre-packed donations, enrolled households log in each month and choose from a catalog of nearly 970 items — groceries, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, school materials, and more.

Access is built to be frictionless. There are no repeated applications, no case reviews, no stigma of lining up for aid. Once enrolled, a household's monthly points arrive automatically — a quiet, reliable act of support that respects their privacy and their agency.

The platform currently serves families across four regions: Taipei, Tainan, Hualien, and Taitung — with community logistics ensuring that every order reaches the door, not just the warehouse.

Step 1

Receive Points

Each enrolled household receives 1,000 points on the 1st of every month — automatically, no application required.

Step 2

Browse and Choose illustration

Browse & Choose

Using their phone, families browse a catalog of ~970 items — rice, cooking oil, laundry detergent, body wash, canned goods, school supplies — and select exactly what their household needs that month.

Step 3

LoveLife Centre packs and ships each order through our community logistics network across Taipei, Tainan, Hualien, and Taitung.

Points reset monthly. There is no accumulation, no bureaucracy, no judgment. The system is designed to feel like what it is: a private, members-only resource platform built for dignity, not charity.

Beyond the Platform

When a bag of rice isn't enough.

Warm Meal Box — MSM Ending Hunger Program

For families where caregivers work long hours and children are home alone, an uncooked bag of rice isn't always a solution. MSM's Warm Meal Box provides ready-to-heat frozen meal kits — home-style dishes so that a child who can't operate a stove can still have a hot meal, and an exhausted caregiver can sit down to dinner with their family.

The people who make these meals were once supported by MSM themselves. Now trained and employed through our livelihood training program, they contribute back to the community that helped them.

A Cycle of Community: Receive MSM Support → Join Livelihood Training → Produce Warm Meal Boxes → Reach Families in Need

NT$700 / month — one family's monthly Warm Meal Box. A hot meal, every evening, for a child home alone.

2025 Impact

Last year, we showed up — over a million times.

2025 Impact: 3,577 households served · 24,431 orders fulfilled · 99.96% point utilisation rate · 208,826 kg essential goods delivered · 1,094,878 service instances

Every month on the 1st, over 2,000 families open the platform and choose what their household needs. That moment of choice — small as it sounds — is what dignity looks like in practice.

From the Community

Family story — placeholder

“I used to wonder how I'd feed my children tomorrow. Now I'm the one making sure other families can.”

Jun  ·  Single mother of two  ·  Hualien

When Jun's workplace accident left her unable to work, she was already raising two children alone. Medical bills were mounting. Government assistance covered some of it — but not enough.

MSM's child sponsorship program became a lifeline for her family. And through the CARE Platform, Jun could choose exactly what her household needed each month — not a fixed box of whatever was available, but the specific items her children actually used.

Then, in 2025, something shifted. Recognizing her background in professional cooking, MSM invited Jun to join the Warm Meal Box production team. The woman who had once received support was now preparing home-style frozen meal kits for families like her own.

The meals she makes — braised pork belly, spicy doubanjiang spare ribs — are the same kind she once wished she could put on her family's table every night.

From recipient to contributor. This is what community looks like.

Infrastructure for Resilience

The same platform that feeds a family today can shelter a community tomorrow.

The LoveLife Centre isn't just a monthly service — it's a social infrastructure that can scale when everything goes wrong. In 2025, when the Chiayi-Tainan earthquake struck, the same network used to deliver monthly household supplies pivoted to reach 999 households with goods, appliances, and home repair support. When Typhoon Ragasa hit, MSM's community logistics served 10,900 hot meals to affected families.

Earthquake Response

Chiayi-Tainan · 2025

✓  999 households — goods, appliances, home repairs

✓  41 households — emergency evacuation & shelter

✓  401 household visits — mid/long-term housing support

Typhoon Response

Typhoon Ragasa · 2025

✓  10,900 hot meals served

✓  57 homes repaired

✓  145 boxes (925 kg) of emergency supplies

Resource insecurity doesn't pause for disasters. Neither do we.
