Unlocking Memories, Reinvigorate Lives

"My parents had a matrilocal marriage; due to the fact that I am the oldest one in the family, I have to take on my mother's last name. My father has been detached from me since I was little. I enrolled into a primary school when I was 10, while my father refused to pay for my tuition." "My marriage was arranged by parents when I was 18 years old. My husband was 20 years older than me. He's a tall, charming, and mild tempered guy from Jiangxi…however, I didn't like him at first, I ran away every time I saw him."

Every elder has his/her own unique life story to tell, via "New Life Art Project", The Mustard Seed Mission invited Dr. Chen, a specialist in Neuromedicine, to open the treasure boxes of those memories through arts and companionship.

One-on-one Accompany and Listening

Story of Mr. Wen --

"My parents had a matrilocal marriage; due to the fact that I am the oldest one in the family, I have to take on my mother's last name. My father has been detached from me since I was little. I enrolled into a primary school when I was 10, while my father refused to pay for my tuition. I had sweet potatoes for lunch everyday, which were all handpicked by me. My teacher found out that I always had lunch by myself outside of the classroom with only sweet potatoes in my lunchbox. After that, she prepared an extra lunchbox for me every lunchtime, and to this day I'm thankful for what she had done." "I hated my PE teacher. He used to beat me up with a bamboo stick because I was fat and didn't like to exercise, so one day I secretly threw his bicycle into the field."

"My snacks back in the days were bananas, it was like banana all-you-can-eat. Also, I went to chapels to get free milk, flour and butter; when I got home, I mixed them together and fried, Yummy! I also missed the times when I went fishing on rainy days with mosquito nets. It was fun."

The marriage of Su

"I was born in Yunlin. My father named me Su. I had measles along with a serious fever when I was 7, and lost my left ear's hearing since then. Afterwards, I felt a sense of inferiority. My marriage was arranged by my parents back when I was 18 years old. My husband was 20 years older than me. He's a tall, charming, and mild tempered guy from Jiangxi…however, I didn’t like him at first, despite the fact that he bought food for my family everyday and even cooked for us, I still ran away every time I saw him. After we got married, he treated me well, and I didn't have to worry about anything. Gradually, I got used to his accompany; the 49 years of marriage is a blessing to me. The key of a good marriage would be putting up with anything, and respect each other. My husband taught me how to be frugal. He was willing to do chores, and let me be in charge of everything at home."

Visible Emotion

Some elderlies are not used to sharing their stories and expressing their emotions. The life stories of the elderlies would have been long locked in the boxes of memory due to the lack of accompany and person to share. The Mustard Seed Mission connected with Dr. Chen to start the "New Life Art Project" and invited her to guide those elderlies through the forms of arts and companionship. Within 9 sessions, every elderly has a one-on-one mentor to accompany them. Besides, every elderly has his/her own "art partner" alongside, leading them to explore memories deep in their mind professionally. The elderlies started to recall their past or family, as the sad parts triggered tears or long silence.

The life memories of the elderlies are shown via arts and crafts done by themselves. Their artworks became a vessel to express feelings and preserve the precious memories.

As the population ages, mental and physical care are equally important. The Mustard Seed Mission sees the needs and wants of the elderlies. Thanks for the professional listening and caring done by all the "art partners", allowing the elderlies to share life in laughter and tears!

你要盡心、盡性、盡 意、盡力愛主 ─ 你的神。其次就是說:要愛人如己。(馬可福音12章30-31節)

You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, You will love your neighbor as yourself. (Mark 12:30-31)
